The Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. Shortly after the U.S. government argued that it was impossible to know where the loyalties of Japanese-Americans rested. President Franklin Roosevelt ordered the removal of Japanese immigrants and Americans of Japanese heritage from their homes to be imprisoned in internment camps throughout the country.
